In healthy joints, the synovial membrane, which is the membrane that lines the joint capsule, is thin. The cartilage that covers the bones is smooth and a layer of synovial fluid covers the joint surfaces so that the joints can glide smoothly over one another.

If anything goes wrong with any of these factors, inflammatory pain starts to occur or stiffness becomes apparent i.e. as with arthritis, back pain or joint mobility problems. Sometimes swelling appears as the synovial membrane thickens or excess fluid is produced. At times, some enlargement of the bones may occur.

Recommended Dietary considerations to assist healing by reducing acid producing foods and balancing acid/alkaline pH levels are shown below:

Why is it important to balance pH levels?
A proper ratio between alkaline and acid foods in the diet is essential for balanced body chemistry, maintaining good resistance against disease and to assist in the healing of disease. A healthy natural ratio is around 4 parts alkaline to 1 part acid (80%-20%). If we eat too many acid-producing foods, our ratio drops and our normal body function is drastically compromised. Alkaline neutralize the acid.

Alkalizing foods (need to be 80% of dietary intake) - All green foods, vegetable & fruit juices especially pineapple, vegetable soups (no additives or soup mixes), figs, raisins, almonds, dates, carrots, celery, cucumber, lettuce, watercress, grapefruit, bananas, watermelon, millet, salad greens, virgin olive oil, papaya, lemons, limes, kumara, grapes, stevia (sugar alternative herb), green tea, herbal tea, cottage cheese, flaxseed oil, dates, most seeds especially pumpkin seeds, buckwheat, potatoes, kelp, ginger, sea salt & an attitude of cheerfulness, generosity of thinking, love & forgiveness

Neutral ash foods - Organic milk, butter, vegetable oils, whey & yoghurt.

Acid forming foods (need to be 20% of dietary intake)- Oysters, pork, most grains, most nuts except almonds and brazil nuts, lentils, peanuts, eggs, most meats, chicken, liver & organ meats, veal, most fish, matured cheeses, alcohol, coffee, tea, soft drinks, rice, chickpea, soya beans, red beans, ice cream, artificial sweeteners, cigarettes, over-work, stress, anger & resentment.

Dr. Ragnar Berg is an authority on the relationship between acid/alkaline ratio in the diet and the detrimental health effects created when the ratio is out of balance. He recommends 80% alkaline producing foods to 20% acid forming foods. As we ingest a lot more bread and cereal these days, we often suffer from an over acid system.
